Summary

The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world。 Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation。

Enter the latest round of six: Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona, unwilling halves of an unfathomable whole, who exert uncanny control over every element of physicality。 Reina Mori, a naturalist, who can intuit the language of life itself。 Parisa Kamali, a telepath who can traverse the depths of the subconscious, navigating worlds inside the human mind。 Callum Nova, an empath easily mistaken for a manipulative illusionist, who can influence the intimate workings of a person’s inner self。 Finally, there is Tristan Caine, who can see through illusions to a new structure of reality—an ability so rare that neither he nor his peers can fully grasp its implications。

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society’s archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death。 Five, they are told, will be initiated。 One will be eliminated。 The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will。

Most of them。

I am very disappointed because I really thought I would like this book, but NOLong story short: flat characters and too many of them (we don't have enough time to meet and care of any of them), in the end they could all go off and died and I wouldn't have batted an eyelash, and the plot wants to be really big and interesting, but we can't connect with the history so that we care enough。I really wanted to like it。The only reason I don't give her a star is because I can see the potential, but she I am very disappointed because I really thought I would like this book, but NOLong story short: flat characters and too many of them (we don't have enough time to meet and care of any of them), in the end they could all go off and died and I wouldn't have batted an eyelash, and the plot wants to be really big and interesting, but we can't connect with the history so that we care enough。I really wanted to like it。The only reason I don't give her a star is because I can see the potential, but she really got caught up in the making process。 。。。more

Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it

3。5* maybe。 This story was very confusing to me and I wasn’t sure where it was going。 But hey I’m a sucker for dark academia and the characters intrigued me, so I stayed till the confusing end。

i don't think i've got much explanation to do regarding this book: Read it。 It's a story about magic but it's character-driven, you barely remember the magic because the characters feel real and palpable, amazing experience。Also, Olivia, I hope you hurry and publish de sequel so I can continue living because I just have so many questions right now !!! i don't think i've got much explanation to do regarding this book: Read it。 It's a story about magic but it's character-driven, you barely remember the magic because the characters feel real and palpable, amazing experience。Also, Olivia, I hope you hurry and publish de sequel so I can continue living because I just have so many questions right now !!! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 DNF @ 43% This was honestly a disappointing read。 The magic system felt underdeveloped and inconsistent。 The characters all seemed to have one personality trait。 I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep six characters straight but it was too easy。 Despite every chapter being them rambling on about themselves, they were so flat。 I wouldn’t consider it character driven because their characterizations didn’t drive the plot or story along。 After 160 something pages there was very little story progre DNF @ 43% This was honestly a disappointing read。 The magic system felt underdeveloped and inconsistent。 The characters all seemed to have one personality trait。 I was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep six characters straight but it was too easy。 Despite every chapter being them rambling on about themselves, they were so flat。 I wouldn’t consider it character driven because their characterizations didn’t drive the plot or story along。 After 160 something pages there was very little story progression。 The characters also didn’t feel situated in place。 There was next to no description of what I assume was a sprawling estate。Little details that irked me; The writer got started writing Harry Potter fanfiction, which is clear because she borrowed similar dynamics and storylines with Nico’s friend group and the Marauders。 Ex: Nico transforming into an animal once a month to be with Gideon。 In HP the whole once a month thing makes sense because Remus Lupin is a werewolf, so his friends transform with him once a month。 Here it made no sense bc Gideon was some hybrid??? Still not entirely sure what he’s supposed to be, with his mom coming out of the sink drain?? Anyway Nico’s once a month transformations are explained away by it being hard to transform but honestly it felt like such a pointless plot point to borrow from the Marauders。Another detail that bothered me was that all of a sudden Tristian couldn’t see what others saw when an illusion was in place (because he sees through illusions)。 But this seemingly makes no sense because then how does he know people were putting illusions on in the first place。 Because several times he calls out people’s illusions without being told they have one on, meaning he knows they have something covering an aspect of themselves or whatnot。 For instance if he can sense that someone is covering a zit and see through to that zit, why couldn’t he tell where the illusions were being thrown around the room during the battle with Libby? The whole Ezra being in on things wasn’t surprising to me。 And yes I read about half of the book and then the last twenty pages and honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Loved the dark academia feeling this book oozes with。 Very smart read。 Character driven but wow, those last 60 pages of the book! Went into it thinking it was a stand alone and well…it’s not so prepare yourself for an epic cliff hanger and waiting until 2022 for some answers。

Alright, this book was incredible。 It was unlike anything I've ever read and made me feel like a scientist。 The characters were all fully fleshed out and completely different from one another which made reading about each one and how they interacted with each other so interesting。The way that the author mixed physics with magic was just *chefs kiss* and I didn't want it to end。 The story made me feel like I was falling down a hill with no idea where the hell I was going the whole time, and I hon Alright, this book was incredible。 It was unlike anything I've ever read and made me feel like a scientist。 The characters were all fully fleshed out and completely different from one another which made reading about each one and how they interacted with each other so interesting。The way that the author mixed physics with magic was just *chefs kiss* and I didn't want it to end。 The story made me feel like I was falling down a hill with no idea where the hell I was going the whole time, and I honestly still don't。 I have so many questions left unanswered but I'm not honestly that bothered since I know another book will come eventually。 Impeccable vibes, impeccable character building, impeccable, wild ass story。 。。。more

This was a weird ride。First of all, I’m rounding my rating, but this book actually got a 3。8/5⭐️ in my opinion。 This will be a lengthy review since there is a lot to unpack here, so I’ll first address my issues with the book itself, and then Ill talk about the characters。WTF was this supposed to be about?I think this book had SO much potential, yet it threw part of it away。 I will admit that the writing style was very philosophical and could appeal to a lot of people, but given the fact that I r This was a weird ride。First of all, I’m rounding my rating, but this book actually got a 3。8/5⭐️ in my opinion。 This will be a lengthy review since there is a lot to unpack here, so I’ll first address my issues with the book itself, and then Ill talk about the characters。WTF was this supposed to be about?I think this book had SO much potential, yet it threw part of it away。 I will admit that the writing style was very philosophical and could appeal to a lot of people, but given the fact that I read this in one sitting in the hopes that I didn’t DNF it, I grew a little impatient with it, trying to analyze every single bit of thought the characters had by trying to simplify it。 I had a bit of and issue with the book’s direction as well。 I think the intention was to have a character driven story with and underlying interesting plot, but I suppose in trying to perfect one, the other one was left unattended。 I didn’t understand at all the characters intentions or at least half of their thought process, yet I found them being repetitive about the same stuff all the time。 The ending was all sorts of unexpected in a way that I think the author either came up with it on a whim or just lacked to explain it better, because in my opinion this book didn’t end in a cliffhanger, it ended with missing a fuck load of information。Lastly, I would’ve loved for the book to go more in depth on the Society。 The book glossed over easily over monumental stuff like stopping TIME for example, but went in depth as how Nico was giving Parisa a leg massage whilst talking about Gideon。 Stupid if you ask me。 I also wish there would’ve been a better world-building。 I know urban-fantasy books in some ways don’t delve deeper into that due to the fact that they use our already existing world as base, yet it wouldn’t have hurt to make the experience more vivid by explaining how the mansion looked like or the places inside it (since it was the place they usually spent more time in)。 The magic system was really cool, but I still didn’t understand some of its technicalities, though maybe I’m just stupid for not understanding them。Onto the characters, I’ll just point out my issues in a numeric format:1。 Why was everyone shit to Libby? Like man, she was literally the most relatable and likable character out of the 6 of them, and yet she was warranted with the most judging。 Her curiosity, insecurity, and naivety was rather endearing to me, so seeing that almost everyone tried to crush it out of her by making her feel less, honestly had me one step away of throwing the book。 I hope very deeply my dearest Libby gets a corruption arc and just burns the whole world down, and I’ll be there being her number one supporter。2。 Callum can eat shit, yet I still find him to be one of the most complex and interesting characters out of all of them, so I can’t complain much。3。 Tristan’s character in my opinion just went downhill as the book progressed。 I liked much better his rough personality and his very cool deduction and observing skills when he pointed stuff out in a very crude manner。 I think it was both Parisa and Callum’s manipulation that made him the way he was at then end, or as I saw in a video, how he can’t help but influence his friendships in a way they resemble those of his past personal life。 I will say that Tristan and Libby’s chemistry was amazing and I very much would like to see Nico and Tristan going at it for her。4。 Nico was literally a man child you can’t help but love。 I do wish we had more of his insight in what he thinks of Libby, but oh well I guess we’ll just have to wait until book two。 One thing I actually don’t trust is Gideon。 I cannot explain how or why, but he just gives me an itch。5。 I think I fell for Parisa’s female fatale trap, since I couldn’t help but excuse everything she did, yet trash talk when Callum did similar stuff。 I found that her though process was very interesting, and I hated that I still couldn’t put a finger to what was wrong with Dalton。6。 Lastly, Reina。 She was the first character that I immediately loved, but I think with time she bored me。 For all that power, she seemed driven on wanting more and more knowledge, yet not acting on it to get it。 I think either something is off with her, or she’ll evolve more in future books, since we didn’t see a lot from her given the fact that the book is barely 400 pages long with 6 different point of views changing constantly。There may be other analysis to be made when you think of it further, but I think I’ll just leave it at that since this wasn’t one of my favorite reads at all。 That doesn’t mean the book isn’t good, and I probably would recommend it if someone asked me for something similar to a story like this, yet I still think it was a bit overhyped。 。。。more
